OPI Brand New Skates - Swatches and Review

Wow, can you believe we're in March already? I have another semi HTF polish today, OPI Brand New Skates from the Holiday in Toyland Collection.

This is a funny polish because I always remember it more fondly than when I'm wearing it. It is a gunmetal grey (with a very blue base) with gold flecks through it. It is quite sheer - these pics were three coats.

It looks very sheer in the sunlight unfortunately. It doesn't last too well either, with chips forming at day 2.

However I love the macro shot. Maybe I just need to find some appropriate 'underwear' for it, so the gold shimmer stands out.

Are there any polishes you recall fondly, but are let down when you wear them?

Chanel Nouvelle Vague - Swatches and Review

What better way to start the week than with a Chanel, semi HTF? Today we have Nouvelle Vague from the Les Pop Up de Chanel 2010 collection.

This turquoise, aqua, Tiffany Blue colour is one of my favourites, so I spent a while tracking this down. Ironically I paid less for it than a retail Chanel here in Australia ($40, for those of you overseas).

I had no trouble with the formula, and it lasted on the nail well. It is very similar to China Glaze For Audrey, but I prefer the Chanel as it is a smidgen lighter with the 'trade mark' Chanel hidden shimmer.

Here is a bottle comparison shot. Very similar, but For Audrey is a pure creme (sometimes a little chalky for me) and a touch darker.

Flakie Follow Up - A England Saint George

Just a quick post today as I went flakie mad with Saint George and thought I'd share the results. One coat of Saint George, one coat of Essie Shine of the Times, topped with one coat of Nfu Oh #54. And 3 coats of Nfu Oh #51 on pinkie.

Is anyone else starting uni again this week/next week? I am - pretty excited, though I hope it won't take a toll on the blog!

A England St George - Swatches and Review

I was so excited to receive St George (and Dragon) in the mail this week because ever since the first nail wheel swatches came out I knew it would be instant love with St George.

St George is a spectacular teal/forest green holo from the Legends collection. It is very similar in make up to Tristam and Lady of the Lake. The above photo is one coat. Yes. ONE coat. The formula is absolutely dreamy, perfect consistency and pigment. As in, one of the best formulas I have ever used. I also had just washed my hair and there is not one chip or speck of polish missing.

I can't stop looking at my hands. It's that good. There is a very soft linear holo going on, but the perfectly scattered effect is stand out.

Most photos I take in the morning, but this was as the sun was going down - just in case you thought my hands looked rather golden as opposed to ghosty grey like usual.

This is the inside shot where the blue comes out a little more.

This post might seem like a raving fan girl post, but I can't help it. A England polishes have the best formula I've come across and the colours are rich and the holos in particular unique. Tigi Catwalk Conditioners - Comparison and Reveiw

I haven't been loyal to one haircare range for many years now. Every time one runs out, I purchase a different one. I think I just like change too much. I've tried just about every line within Redken, Kerastase and Tigi. So when Tigi relaunched their Catwalk range, I was excited to see what was on offer.

There are three ranges with new branding, Sleek Mystique, Curlesque and Your Highness. I give them points for interesting names. If you've used the brand before you know they have a penchant for quirky names like Dumb Blonde, Control Freak and Superstar.

The bottles are cylindrical and have a twist top which I'm a fan of... I have a bad habit of sending loose caps flying and snapping off flip tops. I like the colour scheme too, the base colour with black accents makes them glow a little and look tres chic in the bathroom. They are also sulphate free.

I'll review each on it's own so you can see a review and comparison - my hair type is uncoloured, fine, wavy bordering on curly and leans dry with some frizz.

Sleek Mystique Calming Conditioner

This is for anyone with straight hair and you want to control the frizzies. The scent is floral and creamy, sort of like a dulled version of Estee Lauder Beyond Paradise. Some key ingredients are rice bran oil, Japanese honeysuckle and lychee. The formula is rich, yet lotion like and works almost instantly. It washes out well, and when my hair dried I could easily use a comb and not a brush - that's how well it works! My hair is noticeably shinier since using it. 5/5!

Curlesque Hydrating Conditioner

As the name suggests, this one is for girls with curls. To begin with I thought I got a dud bottle, because the consistency of this is like a thick paste. Almost impossible to squeeze out, so I resorted to taking off the cap each time, thus eliminating the great twist top feature. It turns out other reviewers say the same about consistency - a major negative. But once you get past it and you figure out how to quickly emulsify it so it doesn't slip out of your hand like a brick, it sets like a mask in your hair. Oddly enough it is the easiest to rinse out though, with no residue. The smell is pretty strong, but pleasant, the cleanest of the bunch. Long term use resulted in mild scalp dryness which I'm not too happy about. 2.5/5

Your Highness Nourishing Conditioner

Finally, Your Highness is for volume. Some ingredients include lavender, jasmine and almond fruit extract. In short I found this one pretty average. Again, the smell is nice, the sweetest of the bunch (a bit like Mariah Carey's perfume), but it doesn't create super mega volume. I thought I noticed a little bit of bounce after use, but that might've just been blind hope. My hair was still soft, though I've noticed a bit of build up over time. 3/5

Valentine's Nails - China Glaze Something Sweet + OPI That's Hot Pink

Happy Valentine's Day lovely readers! I hope you are all swimming about in copious amounts of chocolate/flowers/jewellery/Hallmark cards. Or you might be treating it like any other day, much like I am.

Though I did decide to attempt a bit of themed nail art. Big mistake. Consider this the diary of a nail fail.

It all started out innocently enough with 2 coats of China Glaze Something Sweet from the Up & Away collection. Lovely polish (though a tad too blue leaning for me) with maximum opacity.

The outdoor shot is more colour accurate, however I prefer this colour. It's a bit whiter. But anyway. So far so good.

Then I decided to get all tricky and add some tape tips with OPI That's Hot! Pink. They look a lot better IRL as you can't see the textural difference like you can in the photo. I didn't mind this look, in fact, one could say I liked it. From a distance. Alas, I was not content and thought it not Valentine-y enough, so I decided to free hand some hearts in. Brace yourselves.

It is with great delight I present to you, the Nail Fail. Chunky, patchy, uneven hearts. These also look better from a distance. Like 50m away. I'm going to keep them on for as long as possible as a reminder never to embark on the nail art journey again. I also keep laughing every time I look at them, which is great for my endorphins.

Zoya Edyta - Swatches and Review

It is a wee bit of a cop out when one says 'oh it photographs terribly' but this has to be the worst polish to photograph. Ever. It doesn't correctly show colour and it looks very, very greasy. If that's even possible.

It's highly unfair to the poor polish though, because Edyta is absolutely gorgeous!

It is a charcoal/green with gold flecks throughout. One minute it's a subtle grey, the next it's fiercely green. You wonder where it comes from, but looking at the bottle, it has a super heavy blue base.

So very inky blue!

This crop looks like a mythical toad creature..

And this looks like the pond it would live in.

But regardless of strange descriptors, this is a polish every Zoya collector must have. It's one of their best in my opinion.

Nubar Moon Shadow - Swatches and Reviews

I haven't worn a lot of duochromes lately, so I thought I'd delve into my Nubar stash to rectify the problem.

Moon Shadow probably wasn't the best choice though, as the duochome is extraordinarily dull. In different lights it does go from purple to maroon nicely.

This is about the most duo you're going to get.

On the plus side though, this purple is simply stunning on it's own.

It has super fine shimmer throughout and the formula was a dream - only two coats. Think of the subtle duo as an added bonus.

See the little hint of green at the side? And the deep shimmer.

I think I'll need to try out some more duochromes before the itch is scratched.

11 fun facts...

1. I have a bad habit of ironically using terms like 'lol' and 'that's hot' which then become part of the daily conversation and people start thinking I'm being fully srs!

2. I finished my law degree last year but will be doing a Masters this year in an unrelated field. I would like to make use of the law degree and be a barrister one day for the flowing robes and wigs.

3. I have a keen interest in astrology. That's not to say I follow it or base life decisions on it, but over the years I have accumulated an absolutely ridiculous amount of knowledge on star signs, moon signs, numerology, chinese astrology, and palmistry. I can write out my star chart with ease. And when I combine all the methods, they do freakishly represent me.

4. I can listen to a song once I remember 95% of the lyrics for next time.

5. I have never dyed my hair. Ever. Call me arrogant, but I really like my natural blondeness. It works well with my ghost like complexion.

6. I'm a bit of a Potterhead.

7. My iPod is extremely varied and is one of my favourite possessions. Favourite genres include 80s Hair Metal, Swedish Pop, 70s Rock and 90s Club. The Australian Indie scene is growing on me. I also like anything cringeworthy.

8. I've been reading Vogue since I was 4.

9. I prefer shoes to handbags a million times over. If my bank account was overflowing, I could certainly seek joy in Hermes Birkins, YSL Muse IIs and Chanel galore, but cheap handbags never give me the same thrill bargain shoes do.

10. I'm OCD when it comes to organisation. Bookshelf, CD Shelf and Spice Shelf all need to be in alphabetical order. My nail polishes are sorted in brand, then colour. I am very happy going to peoples houses and tidying for them if requested. Cleaning on the other hand I find painful.

11. I was a fan of my school uniform and miss being able to legitimately wear a tie and not be questioned. I became an expert at various knots, with Windsor being my personal favourite.

1. Why did you start your blog?

I wanted an easy way to follow all my favourite blogs, then I was inspired to start cataloguing my shoe and nail polish collection.

2. Policeman or Fireman? lol

Hot cops. Unless the fireies are with a golden retriever or dalmation. The dog will get me every time.

3. Favourite clothing brand?

That is so difficult! One that embodies my style and I'd buy every single piece from if I had the funds is Balmain, but back to reality, I wear Ralph Lauren most (oxford shirts, blazers etc) and Asos.

4. What is your current favourite TV show?

It isn't current but I love Arrested Development. Always.

5. What is something you love eating that you think other people would find yucky?

Olives and for some reason everyone baulks at lentils...?

6. What diary are you using in 2012?My trusty turquoise Filofax that I've had since 2007.

7. Have you travelled overseas before? Where?
I've been to Singapore and the UK a few times, but not recently.

8. Chocolate or Lollies?

Chocolate. I can't stand lollies.

9. Mac or PC?I started out PC, but since my first iPod in '05, my iCollection has been growing. I got an iMac last year to complete the transformation.

Orly Galaxy Girl - Swatches and Review

I only have a few nail polish collections in full. Zoya Sparkle Collection for example. As well as Orly Cosmic FX. Each one in that collection was fantastic. So I have one of them here today, Galaxy Girl.

Galaxy Girl is a delicious mix of glass flecks and duochrome. It poses as a rich plum, but move your hand and you instantly notice the electric blue flashing at you.

Here we see the plummy side in average light.

And the most fabulous angle with blue and purple a-plenty.

OPI Royal Rajah Ruby - Swatches and Review

I have a confession to make. Usually I'm all over themed manis like it's no one's business, but I totally forgot to do a 'Straya Day mani! (Australia Day for all of you residing outside our large island). So the next best thing was a vampy red that looks like it is glowing from within. Like our Aussie spirit. Or something.... On to the polish.

Like my earlier post on Keys to my Karma, Royal Rajah Ruby hailed from the India Collection.

Black Cherry Chutney seemed to be the vampy favourite from the collection, but RRR was the stand out for me. Gorgeous deep ruby red, opaque in two coats and oh so glowy.

It is one of the few polishes I have that looks like a dent has been made in the bottle (as opposed to most which look 95% full). Highly recommended! I'm thinking of getting a back up.

OPI You're A Doll - Swatches and Review

I'm not sure if I've ever had a nude polished swatched on the blog before, so here it goes, my go to nude, OPI You're a Doll. Possibly one of the cutest OPI names ever?

I'll be honest and say in photographs (mine at least!) it doesn't look as good as when it's on the nail.

Three coats here, but it is very build able, with only a little sheer touch. It's a very milky beige, which sounds pretty meh, but it has great little red glitter flecks throughout.

Again, it doesn't look great all cropped, but I promise on the nail it's a different story. You're A Doll hailed from the Holiday in Toyland collection (loved that one) but is still available at online outlets. Do you wear nudes often? Which is your favourite?

OPI Brights Power - Swatches and Review

It is grey and gloomy here today, so I thought I'd brighten it up with some swatches of OPI Brights Power, a borderline neon orange.

It had a sheer application and is a little jelly-like in consistancy. There is a little VNL in the sun with 3 coats.

In shade however it looks very rich and glossy. It was part of the Mod about Brights collection of 2008 which was one of my favourite 6 piece OPI collections. I don't think this polish is particularly unique any more as there seems to be bright oranges in quite a few collections now days... but if you have it lying around, perhaps pull it out again? I mean it is summer after all!

My Top 3 Hand Creams

As someone who enjoys nail polish so much, it is only logical that an obsession with hand creams would follow. I like to keep my paws hydrated at all times and have tried many methods over the years but these are my top three.

L'Occitane Shea Butter

This cream is thick, rich and the most expensive of my three. You only need to use a small amount and your hands find hydration heaven which helps swallow the cost. It sinks slowly so your skin feels luxuriously moisturised for longer. I use this before bed as it is quite rich and not the best if you want to shuffle papers about or type on a keyboard instantly after. The smell is fairly inoffensive and conjures up images of simple, but ever so french, french hotels.

OPI Avoplex

This product is a new favourite that I received for Christmas in a trio with the Avoplex cuticle oil and remover. OPI describe it as high intensity hand cream and I'd agree with this. It is extremely light and sinks in instantly, yet also strengthens your nails which is a huge bonus. It has a very fresh scent that doesn't overpower the room - which means it's my perfect work hand cream.

Crabtree & Evelyn Rosewater Hand Therapy

If you think Crabtree & Evelyn is a bit of a, shall we say, older brand, you are sorely mistaken. This cream may smell like roses, but certainly nothing like Nanna's old drawer liners from 1939. It is rather delightful and crisp and as modern a version of roses as one can get. Just like Jo Malone Red Roses parfum. The texture is in between my first two picks which means it is a great all rounder and the scent is nice and strong.

Dior Blue Denim + Nfu Oh 52 and 54 - Swatches and Review

In response to recent flakie mania, as promised here's a quick post of Dior Blue Denim with Nfu Oh 52 and 54 layered.

I think the Nfu Oh 54 combination is my favourite - so much blue! 54 is also set in a clear base.

Here is a crop of 52. Compared to 54 it has tiny green glass flecks through it. 56 is similar, but all green, no blue.

I think I might be able to keep my Finger Paint flakie lemming at bay with my 52 + 2010 layering combo.

Dior Blue Denim - Swatches and Review

I love blue cremes. In fact I probably have far too many in my collection, yet I keep buying them, so should probably purge some.. Dior Blue Denim though certainly will not be going anywhere, this one is a keeper!

Blue Denim was released with Safari Beige and Tuxedo last year and it is a perfect mid and inky blue creme. The above photo is two coats with no top coat - look at that gloss! J'adore Dior brushes (couldn't help the pun sorry) as they are stiff and paddle like, yet manage to spread the polish on the nail evenly.

So just a quick post today, but hope you like it. My next post will have some Nfu Oh Flakies over the top of Blue Denim, so stay tuned.

My 100th Post! Dollish Polish Toxic Avenger Swatches and Review

So I've finally reached 100 posts! I didn't think I'd stick the blog out for that long to be honest, but I am so glad I did. I love telling you all about my polishes and shoes and hearing your feedback, so here's to 100 more.

I thought to mark the 100th post I'd better show you something pretty darn special. Today I have what is my new absolute favourite polish this year... that might not seem to impressive, given it's only the 5th day of the new year, but this one is srsly amazing.

I give you Toxic Avenger, by the wonderful Dollish Polish on Etsy. It is so complex and beautiful and breathtakingly fabulous.

Firstly you think, my what an incredible duochrome we have here. It is green, purple, bronze and gold, reminiscent of Orly Space Cadet and Nubar Purple Beach. This would be enough for most people to add it straight to their top 10. But if not...

Just look at the holographic under lamp light! Stunning!

Here we have both duochrome AND holo. I really love this one. Can you tell?

Finally a crop. Oh the complexity! This was two coats and it went on smoothly and dried quickly like most holos do. It doesn't seem as prone to chips though like most holos, which earns it another gazillion points. Also, my bottle is only a mini 5ml, but I believe she will be doing full size ones.

Now, if you'd like to get hold of this gem, you need to go vist Dollish polish on Etsy. She is away until the 9th of January, but it's promised she'll return with a full inventory. I will be tempted to buy 7 backups of this. Plus one called Expecto Patronum which I need as I'm a Harry Potter nerd from way back. What about you?

Nicki Minaj for OPI - Fly, Save Me and Pink Friday - Swatches and Review

Happy New Year everybody! I hope you all had fun celebrations on Saturday night and recovered on Sunday. I am very excited to post half of a 2012 collection, Nicki Minaj for OPI. If this is any indication of what's to come from OPI this year, I can't wait!

If you don't know who the Super Bass star is, from OPI:
Whilst Nicki Minaj has taken the hip hop world by storm, her music is only part of the equation. She regularly gains a great deal of attention for her style, her one-of-a-kind hair-styles and standout makeup. She has also become a fashion inspiration, noted for her daring costumes and hair colour both on and off the stage. Recognised as a fashion icon, Nicki featured on the Victoria Secret runway and was seated next to Vogue’s Anna Wintour at the Carolina Herrera New York Fashion Week showing.

Did you watch the Victoria's Secret show recently? Her outfit was almost like a mish mash of all the colours in this collection ranging from lime to gunmetal. Though my review consists of pink, blue and silver.

First up I have Pink Friday, a bubblegum mid toned cream.

I reviewed Got a Date To-Knight a little while ago and this is like a better version. The formula was beautiful without an ounce of chalkiness or visible nail line. I have two coats on here.

Really love the tone it takes in natural light, although it is a pink which most companies have thousands of shades of, I think this one is one of the more unique colours.

Next up is Fly, a gorgeous blue-teal that I am calling a jelly-creme.

Formula wise, I think this was perfection. Not too runny, yet slid across the nail like butter. It had a definite jelly finish with one coat, but turned into a creme on the second.

In real life there was a hint more green, but this was a very accurate shot.

I saved the best until last as I am an absolute glitter fiend. Save Me has holographic bar glitter (which I know divides the masses - not me though, I love it) coupled with silver glitter to form a fantastic top coat.

Here it is layered over Fly and Pink Friday.

The above photo is with three coats. I could've tried four, but I find four coats of glitter usually peels.. For best results I'd try it over a silver base.

It had spectacular sparkle in the sun!

Finally a crop, one coat over Fly. It's nice and dense without over powering the base.

The Nicki Minaj collection will be available at beauty salons from mid January and at David Jones nationally from February for $19.95.

ChanelGraphite

Graphitewas part of the much hyped Fall 2011 Illusions d’Ombres collection. AlthoughPeridot was touted to be the standout, once Graphite hit the shelves there was nocompetition. Not just a boring silver metallic, Graphite managed to combine afoil finish with a subtle pewter and gold duochrome that flattered all skintones. The finish was just as exquisite, wore like iron and only just requiredtwo coats.

ChinaGlaze Sea Spray

2011 wasthe year of blues with Sea Spray from the Anchors Away collection setting thestandard. The grey undertones and subtle shimmer allowed Sea Spray to be wornby all age groups and instantly became a modern neutral. The only minordownside was that the formula was a little thicker than regular China Glazes.

Butter London Wallis

Glitterswere a huge trend this year, with some brands bringing out glitter onlycollections. Butter London followed the trend in the most unique way possible.Take a traditional ‘ugly-pretty’ colour like olive green, couple it with a nonglitter thick shimmer and you have Wallis. It goes perfectly with daytime ornight time looks as the golden shimmer gently glows against a black base. Likemost Butters, Wallis goes on smoothly (well, like butter!) and is opaque in twocoats.

OPI Keys to My Karma - Layering, Swatches and Review

I am not a huge believer in red nail polish, but OPI Keys to My Karma is hands down one of my favourite polishes, red or not. It is from the India collection and is the perfect blue toned red, which flatters my ghostly mitts no end. It has a jelly like consistency, yet is opaque in two coats. The formula is superb.

Isn't it loveeeeeeeely? Isn't it wonnnnderfulllll... Anyway. Although in its natural state it is perfection, in the festive spirit I layered my heart out with this one.

L-R is China Glaze Ring in the Red, Essie As Gold as it Gets, Essie Shine of the Times and Ring in the Red again. Two coats each.

I really like the two Essie Luxeffects, but for depth and sparkle I think the winner goes to China Glaze. I tried Ring in the Red on its own, but it was still a little sheer and had nowhere near the depth of it layered.

I think this will be all my red and greens for now, I'm especially excited to show off half the Nicki Minaj collection in my next nail post - perfect for New Years!

China Glaze L8R G8R - Swatches and Review

I hope everyone had a great Christmas! I think I'll make the most of these last few days before new years to post some more green and red polishes. Today is an amazing green from the China Glaze OMG collection, L8R G8R.

It is a lovely spring green with an extremely strong holo. It has more yellow to it than Nubar Reclaim, however the Nubar is easier to source.

L8R G8R goes on very smoothly and is opaque in two coats. I didn't have any balding, as is the case with some others from OMG.

I love how holos make the polish look like velvet. I'd drape myself in velvet if it were socially acceptable.*

Finally a crop. The blue holo is strong enough to make L8R G8R look turquoise at times.

If you can find this on eBay for a good price, absolutely run, don't walk.

*Gold star for anyone who can guess the quote.. or who would also wear velvet at any given opportunity ;)

Christmas Nails and My Giveaway Winner

Merry Christmas for tomorrow everyone! I couldn't wait to get my festive mani underway (as I feel Party Hearty cannot really be on daily rotation) so here are some photos.

I decided to go with a China Glaze Frosty as my base (2 coats) with one coat of China Glaze Party Hearty over the top and for the accent nail one coat of OPI Keys to my Karma with one coat of China Glaze Ring in the Red to finish.

And on my right hand I had an accent with two coats of the ever famous China Glaze Emerald Sparkle.

These are slightly more golden because I added two coats of Essie As Gold As It Gets over the top. I don't think I love it as it makes Frosty look a little discoloured.

Essie Mint Candy Apple - Swatches, Review and Layering

Happy Monday everyone! I have a smashing minty green today, Essie Mint Candy Apple from the Winter 2009, Sweet Time of Year Collection.

I only required two coats of this of this creme to get it even. I think the colour is my favourite of the minty greens (better than China Glaze Re-freshmint for example) but after a day I thought I might try some festive layering.

Next to a green bottle it was slightly greener - the photo has been retouched to colour adjust because my hands were literally fire engine red in it! Strange.

Here is China Glaze Party Hearty and Essie as Gold as it Gets. Party Hearty was by far my most loved layer.

OPI Warm and Fozzie - Swatches and Review

Today I have another polish from the OPI Muppets collection, Warm and Fozzie.

Warm and Fozzie is an intense duochrome that is bronze, gold, green and red - perfect colours for the season! This is the slightly greener angle.

And the redder angle. You can see I had a little trouble with bald patches though - this is three coats. Although the formula was great going on the nail.

Here are some crops to help you visualise the colour shift further.

To me it reminds me of Christmas spices and Gingerbread so I'm loving it this season. What do you think? And have you entered my giveaway yet? :)

OPI Excuse Moi - Swatches and Review

When I reorganised my polish stash I went through and sorted the little vials of colour into collections. I had a few seasonal collections, but the most I had were Holiday collections. So it was no surprise when the OPI Muppets Holiday collection came out I'd pick a few up.

Excuse Moi is inspired by Miss Piggy and is a fabulous pink hex glitter that is opaque in two coats.

It leans a little more peachy in low light, but still very pretty.

In the zoom you can see orange, blue, pink, green, silver and yellow hex glitters along with regular rainbow glitter - far more complex than you think upon further inspection!

Shoe Story Sunday - Melissa Ultragirls

Although my penchant for heels is overwhelming at times, Miss Practical always manages to get in my ear and suggests perhaps some flats are the correct purchase this time around. I usually wear Keds in various patterns as my go to flat, but I decided it was time for a change so I checked out Melissa, creator of my beloved Lady Dragon Skull heels. Her Ultragirl flats wooed me like no other.

The first pair I bought were a limited collaboration with Barbie, as seen by the hot pink foot bed. I love the fact they have high heels printed on them, almost in the same vain as Anya Hindmarch's 'I'm not a plastic bag' message. Oh the irony! These shoes smell like bubblegum (as all Melissas do) and although are made of a jelly/plastic material, they are soft and comfortable.

There is a peep toe at the front for ventilation and although you can't see it on this photo, there is a metal Barbie head on the back side of each shoe.

The second pair I picked up were in a leopard print. I thought they might look cheap at first, but upon getting them home they are more neutral and grey than I expected. This is perfect, as already they go with everything.

Close up of the leopard print- not too garish at all. Like the Barbie ones they fit true to size and are very comfortable. They are also a little more bubblegum-y than the others and when they were left in my room the scent filled it temporarily.

I sourced these from Asos for $50 each (with sale and discount code!) which I think is an absolute steal. They seem to be well crafted, but only time will tell how they stand up to prolonged use.

An Attempt at Stripy Nail Art

I am not at all into nail art. I marvel at all you lovelies out there who create gorgeous konad prints, marbling and stripes, but usually it just isn't for me. But one day I was bored and the sticky tape was winking at me, so here is my attempt at nail stripes.

OPI That's Hot! Pink as a base, with, Thumb to Pinkie - Dior Nirvana, Orly Cotton Candy, Orly Sweet Peacock, China Glaze Swing Baby and OPI Rising Star.

On the whole I actually don't mind the effect. But how the stripes are super thick and a little peely at the edges. I think a top coat might've sorted that out though. Oh and the stripes are uneven. How on earth do you cut sticky tape evenly?!

China Glaze Swing Baby - Swatches and Review

Today I have one of my favourite China Glaze polishes, Swing Baby from the Vintage Vixen collection. It is a favourite because I'm a fan of foil finishes and this one switches back and forth from silver to gold effortlessly, with a bit of copper thrown in for good measure. Flattering and practical, I love it.

I have a sneaking suspicion OPI Designer De Better could be a dupe, but I don't own it yet - I'll compare once I acquire it.

OPI Pink Shatter - Swatches and Review

Before Pink Shatter I only had Black Shatter - and I think Pink is my last foray into the shatter/crackle world.

This is Pink Shatter over OPI Coronation, OPI Mermaid Tears and China Glaze Something Sweet. I'm not a huge fan as it was a little more dull than I thought it would be. I also didn't like how it turned puce over the green.

I thought this crop of Coronation was rather attractive though.

China Glaze Snow Globe - Swatches and Review

Snow Globe is a re-release as part of China Glaze's Let it Snow Holiday Collection. It is very unique (though perhaps similar to Deborah Lippmann's new Stairway to Heaven?) and although I like to layer over dark polishes, I thought I'd try something different.

I layered 2 coats of Snow Globe over 2 coats of Essie Ballet Slippers for what I think is a very soft, pretty and feminine look.

It has the ability to glow slightly in low light.

And a zoom of the opalesence. This is fast becoming one of my new favourites.

I'm Back! + My Nail Stash

Exams are done, I'm finally on holidays and can give le blog here the attention it deserves. I thought I'd do a stash post as a welcome back, because they are some of my favourite posts to read on others' blogs! I reorganised my stash a week back when the guilt of always having something to complete/study for had passed, so here is my photo journal of the momentous event.

I'm also playing around with watermarks at the moment, just in case you are wondering. This is my stash tipped out, minus my 'spensives drawer that contains Chanel, Dior, Nfu Oh etc. What a soothing sight!

It took me about half an hour to organise everything into colour collections.

Making the most of my time by creating some polish circles.

I then proceeded to create drawers organised by colour - Blues and greens, Pinks and Purples, then whites, taupes, oranges and yellows. I didn't love this method though, because it still felt a little disorganised.

Then came perfection, my favourite way of storing polishes which is via brand, then colour. OPI is top left, 'spensives top right, then China Glaze, Color Club, A-England and Ozotic Pro. In the final drawer is Nubar, Orly, Zoya, Essie.

A Short Break

It's that time of year all uni students dread, but exams are creeping up again.

As they are my final exams ever, I'm going to take a short blogging break to study and complete them.

I should be back around the 21st of November, by which stage in theory (as graduation always seems to be months after the event) I should be Jaztee LLB - exciting!

Essie Ruby Slippers Swatches and Review

I've never been a huge Wizard of Oz fan, except for those glittery red shoes. So to find a nail polish equivalent is rather exciting.

In the bottle it looks like there are red, gold and orange glitter, but I believe it's all silver in a red jelly base.

This was three coats and as you can see it's a little sheer in places.

Unlike some, the glitter in Ruby Slippers looks more impressive indoors/normal light, than direct sunlight.

Here I think it looks much better than above.

And finally here you see some grittiness.

There are still some floating around on eBay, so if you find it for a reasonable price, pick it up. It's lovely.

China Glaze It's Alive Swatches and Review

Just in time for Halloween is China Glaze It's Alive.

I cannot get enough of this glitter. It is the perfect mix of colours and the small hex glitter is small enough to blend in, but big enough to make a statement.

It's also the perfect shade of swamp green... maybe a radioactive swamp, hence the gold sparkles.

I wish China Glaze would bring out a collection of every colour but with this exact finish.

Blurred indoors to show the gold a bit more. The only negative was that is was prone to peeling off and was a little thirsty for the top coat. Apart from that, perfection!

Taut Gold Standard Collagen Mask and Drink

Today I have some new products from Taut to review. The Gold Standard Collagen Infusion Mask and Collagen Orange Drink.

I wasn't sure how effective the collagen component would be as I'm only in my 20s (and obviously in denial about ageing), but both products had a good result.

On to the review!

Packaging

I loved the packaging of these products. Cream and gold sturdy cardboard boxes with the added excitement of a light holographic sheen throughout. I love holo on my nails, so I'm happy if it's on anything else.

The masks come in individual sachets with cute instructions on the back.

The drinks are secure in their box and have an old school apothecary feel to them in amber bottles with a metal lid.

Mask

First thing I noticed about the mask is that it is very generously drenched in the product in it's pouch. Some masks I've tried have been a little dry, but this had enough liquid to also cover your neck and hands. Top marks for generosity.

Once 15 minuts had passed (though you can leave it for 10), I took it off and the instructions say to pat the remaining liquid into the skin. I found I had an excess of product and had to remove some before I patted. It left me looking a little shiny, so (obviously) it's best to do this mask on a lazy sunday when you have no where to be and the serum can really sink in.

Results wise, I have dry/normal skin with the odd spot and some redness and I found this hydrated really well and after the third use I found redness evened out and my complexion did indeed look a little brighter. I gave one to Mother to try and she concurred with my findings and her skin type is sensitive/combination.

Personally, I would purchase as I think it shows immediate (if not subtle) results. Plus the generous pouches have a 3 year shelf life going by the expiration date on the box.

Drink

I'll be honest and say I thought the concept of a collagen drink was odd, but some Googling showed it is quite popular in Asia. Now I'm no nutritionist so if you're worried about ingesting things, perhaps consult a doc. Also don't drink it if you have seafood allergies as it contains 'fish collagen peptide' - it's also not recommended for pregnant women.

Each box comes with 8 bottles, and you're meant to have about 3-4 per week before bedtime. I found the taste not so pleasant, but beauty is pain, no?

It could be my age but I didn't really notice anything drastic after consuming this. After a week (3 bottles) my nails (which are prone to peeling) seemed a little stronger and I didn't notice negative effects on my complexion. I might've noticed more had I taken 8 bottles, or even taken it long term.

Due to the price and average results I don't think I would try this again. However for you older ladies out there it might be worth testing if you love trying new things.

Bottle Comparison Day 3 - Brights

Here is the final instalment of Bottle Comparison Day for now - until I hoard more polishes to compare!

L-R Butter London Lady Muck, Orly Pixie Dust, China Glaze Sea Spray.

There are all fairly different, Sea Spray is in a league of it's own, whereas Pixie Dust is slightly bluer than Lady Muck. It is the least flattering on pale hands too. I love each one of these though, so worth getting if you like blue/greys.

The biggest difference between these two is THP is a blue based almost neon pink and EP is slightly more coral and muted. I prefer THP, EP washes me out slightly. Still gorgeous pinks though.

Though these would be identical, but alas no! TUT is basically a green with a hint of blue; CK is more blue in the photo, but on the nail is a proper blue/green turquoise with great gold shimmer. TUT dries matte, CK dries shiny.

Mimosa is far more pigmented than BB, but both require three coats. BB is a proper lemon-y pale yellow and Mimosa is a great mid tone. I love yellow!

China Glaze Sugar Plums - Swatches and Review

The best part of summer is sugar plum fruit coming in to season. I just love them. Much like I love this underrated (in my opinion) colour from China Glaze's Holiday collection last year.

This isn't the sort of colour I usually wear, but it is lovely and rich without being blackened. There are also surprise holo particles in it.

They are more evident in person. I don't think this is a great colour for an Australian Christmas, but I can just imagine it for a snowy American/European one.

Here is a blurred shot so you can at least detect the holo!

It was almost opaque in one coat and dried slightly on the gritty side. Nothing a top coat wouldn't fix though. I think it's a fairly unique colour, especially when coupled with the holo, so if you see it around, I'd pick it up!

My Top 4 Nail Care Products

I have to say, my nails aren't as enviable as some bloggers out there (Kiki Chaos, You've Got Nail, Scrangie and Steffels, I'm looking at you!) however I do have some holy grail products that I use to keep them in pleasant condition. These are in order of use, rather than in favourite order.

Number One: Glass Nail File

I bought 4 cheapy glass nail files from eBay, but at the rate the first one is going, I doubt I needed to buy 4. These last forever and give a beautiful finish to the nail. No snagging or tearing plus mine hasn't dulled in months. I believe you just need to wash them with water to bring back their lustre.

Number Two: CND Cuticle Eraser

Sometimes your cuticles may be moisturised, but they need a little extra to help them become invisible. This is where CND come in. As opposed to a moisturiser, this is an AHA exfoliator the gently buffs away obvious cuticle. The tube has a tiny nozzle at the end where you push out a tiny amount on to each finger, then rub it in. It has a slightly odd smell, but initially it smells a little bubblegumy. Mine is still a little visible, but I've only been using this solidly for a couple of weeks. I also purchased this on eBay.

Number Three: Badger Balm Cuticle Butter

I am in absolute love with this product and would easily bathe in it if I could. I have an in depth review here. I have almost finished the tin now and will definitely repurchase. It smells far more natural than Lush or Burt's Bees which is almost a lemon lolly or gelato smell. I apply it once a day before bed and I wake up with soft, squishy cuticles.

Number Four: L'Occitane 25% Shea Butter Hand Cream

This was a gift, thankfully, as the large size can be fairly expensive. This cream is rich and luscious but sinks in to the skin very quickly. I'm not that keen on the smell, although I can live with it based on how well it works. I'm open to other hand creams and often use an Akin one or a Jurlique one. Either way, hand cream is an absolute necessity!

Chanel Blue Boy - Swatches and Review

When I heard Chanel were doing a trio of blues I knew I had to have them. Especially Coco Blue as it took me forever to hunt down Riva at a reasonable price. I bought the Les Jeans collection in full, but today I just have Blue Boy with a Coco Blue and Blue Rebel accent nail.

Blue Boy is three coats (just as I wanted to fix one nail up, but thought for consistency I'd to three) and Coco Blue is two. Personally I love this combination! Blue Boy displayed a few bubbles, but they evened themselves out by the end.

In direct sunlight. Coco Blue has a tiny bit of VNL, but it isn't noticeable usually. Love the ever so pearly finish.

The only problem with Chanel polishes is that the lids are fingerprint magnets! Also I think my left hand is more photogenic than my right... weird. Blue Rebel is second from the left and applied beautifully. I was convinced it would be a dupe for OPI Ski Teal We Drop, but the OPI is far greener.

What do you think of these? Worth the money? Nubar are coming out with what looks like an absolute identical collection, so perhaps that last question is a moot point. But I do love Chanel's application.

OPI have an amazing variety of names. I often read that people wish to be in the naming department and I'm no different! Got A Date To-Knight is a tiny bit groan worthy, but it fits in very well with the theme of the Princess Charming collection.

Got a Date To-Knight is a lovely Barbie pink jelly/creme that takes 3 coats to be opaque. Originally I bought it for my mother who is pale/medium with gold undertones but this looked rather average on her (sorry Mum!) so she gave it back to me.

Her loss is my gain, because it really is lovely and it matches my Vivienne Westwood Melissa skull pumps perfectly. I usually prefer my pinks to be a bit hotter (like my all time favourite OPI That's Hot! Pink) but this one is just so girly and pretty, you can't help but like it.

Is this your sort of pink?

Recent Shoe Arrivals - Vivienne Westwood Melissa and Chinese Laundry

I feel I've been ignoring the shoe component of my blog lately, after I stopped doing Shoe Story Sundays, so today I have two recent purchases I've made.

The first is my Vivienne Westwood for Melissa Lady Dragon V Pink Skull pumps. The first time I wore these I received so many compliments! I personally love the candy pink colour juxtaposed with the seemingly deadly skull, even if it's the cutest little skull you ever did see. They are very comfortable and true to size and they also smell like bubblegum. So much so that during a cocktail party I kept getting wafts of it - a semi acceptable alternative to wearing perfume I think! I also found it had a perfect polish match, OPI Got A Date To-Knight, which I will be reviewing soon.

Then we have the Chinese Laundry Kooper. I bought these to fill a 'neutral pump' gap I had in my shoe closet and they fit the bill perfectly. They are a light taupe suede with a wooden stacked heel. Extremely comfortable, considering they are about 4.5 inches high. I am tempted to get the black ones too. Love the leopard print inside too. These go with almost anything, jeans, dresses, skirts - and they are a very flatting shape. Highly recommended!

I got them both from Amazon where shipping was only $12 for the two. It's my new favourite haunt for shoes.

Comparison - Orly Nite Owl, Butter London All Hail McQueen and Fash Pack

Here is an on the nail comparison, following my comparison bottle day post! I have taupe/light browns today, Orly Nite Owl, Butter London All Hail Mcqueen / The Queen and Butter London Fash Pack.

I was actually trying Chanel Fantastic against AHMcQ to match with a dress I was wearing, so you may ignore that randomness if you please. So, obviously Fash Pack is totally different, whereas AHMcQ has a holo glitter and Nite Owl has silver glitter.

In low light Nite Owl is darker than AHMcQ.

And in Sunlight the glitter differentiation is more obvious.

If you love this shade, they are different enough to get both. I thought both formulas were excellent, both requiring two coats. You can see more photos of Nite Owl here including a zoom shot.

OPI The Show Must Go On - Swatches and Review

OPI The Show Must Go On from last years Burlesque collection is a gold/red/pink/orange duochrome with a foil finish. It is beautifully complex and every movement of the hand gives you a different light.

In the bottle the gold shimmer is quite heavy - in this photo you can see it on the tops of my ring and pinkie finger. This is in the shade.

In direct sunlight the rosy pink colour is brought out more.

It was a great colour under OPI Black Shatter, which brought out more pink in it.

And a zoom to show all three angles.

I don't wear reds too often, but this one is an exception. If you prefer a pinker version, MAC has Bad Fairy which is equally (if not more) stunning.

Skittle Kleancolors over Illamasqua Phallic

Thumb, Top to Bottom - Aurora, Chunky Holo Black, Chunky Holo Purple, Disoc Ball, City Never Sleeps

Top to Bottom - Afternoon Picnic, Holo Chrome, Holiday Jingle, Twinkly Love.

City Never Sleeps and Aurora were my two favourites. Twinkly Love was SO hard to work with, trying to get the hearts on the brush, then to stay in place was a feat. Holo Chrome will no doubt look better on it's own, as will Holiday Jingle.

I've read people complaining about the smell, but I didn't find them that bad. Maybe I'm just desensitised? You can pick these up for $1.75 each from BeautyJoint... Shipping is really reasonable and my order arrived within 3 weeks.

China Glaze Kaleidoscope Him Out - Swatches and Review

What's blue, sparkly and stops a dog in it's tracks? China Glaze Kaleidoscope Him Out of course!

Obviously it is blue and sparkly, but I was outside with a dog and it bounded up to me, then just stopped and stared at my hand. Could've been the treat I had in it, but personally I think it was the fabulousness of KHO.

KHO is from the China Glaze Kaleidoscope collection which is one of my favourites of all time. Scattered and linear holos are hard to find. KHO required three coats and is still a little sheer, but I think the holographic glow makes up for it.

Indoors it is a soft grainy blue, but in any sort of light it becomes a stage show of shine. The only downside is it chips like anything and I had tipwear within 24 hours.

KHO is still floating about on eBay, but you will probably have to pay $15 or so for it. I think it's worth it though!

Chanel Graphite, Peridot and Quartz - Swatches and Review - Pic Heavy!

Some bloggers seem a little anti Chanel at times, but apart from one, my Chanel polishes are exceptional in application, colour and longevity. So when I saw the press release for Graphite, Peridot and Quartz I knew I had to have them... even if I could've bought about 12 OPIs for the same price. The fact Graphite and Peridot were limited edition sent me into a fit of Jade Induced Paranoia as I like to call it. Fear that you pass a limited edition by, only to desperately want it later but be unable to find it/afford it.

Be warned this post is picture heavy and no photos are uniform... I took a vast selection in different conditions and lights - hopefully it will give you a good idea of the colours!

I will do these in order of favour, so number one is Graphite.

This is SO much more than just a gunmetal shimmer. For one, it is a foil. Two, it has a very surprising gold streak through it.

See all the colours? It manages to be silver, gold and bronze all in one.

In the shade it shows off all it's beauty unashamedly.

And in direct sunlight the gun silver shines.

Next is Peridot.

In the bottle it looks mainly gold with blue/green at the sides which is absolutely correct.

It is a total colour shifter, switching from gold, to lime/gold, to blue and the flick of a the wrist.

This was indoor dull light and it took a rich gold/olive bronze turn.

But this was my favourite angle, where it really showed off the blue and green side.

Last but certainly not least is Quartz.

Quartz is a beautiful neutral that can be light or dark depending on the light.

Here it is with flash to show off it's darker side.

But this was it normally - see how it has a slight blue tinge? I just loved that.

When you look really closer it has multi coloured iridescent shimmer. Another bonus!

Overall I absolutely loved this collection and give it 10/10. All the colours are so amazingly complex and frankly I don't think there are any dupes out there (I think there's one for Peridot called Chemistry 510? But I think it's a little flatter than Peridot). Graphite wore like absolute iron and consistently dazzled with it's three golds. Peridot has copped some flack for being too gold but I think that's what makes it so unique. Quartz is the little underdog, but clearly there is more to it than meets the eye.

Chanel polishes are an absolute luxury for me as I'm on a student budget, but these three do not disappoint and I'm so glad I bought them.

China Glaze Snow - Swatches and Review

Happy Spring time everyone! I've been on the white polish bandwagon since '07 and it is one of my favourite colours to wear. Sort of a neutral and sort of a stark statement. Whites can be notoriously bad with application, so when I found the two coat wonder in Snow I was a happy camper.

Snow is from the 2010 Holiday collection and has overtaken OPI Peace Baby as my favourite. It is probably only a few steps away from the dreaded chalk effect, but that is what makes is so beautifully opaque. Peace Baby takes 3 coats and is more jelly like and is definitely sheerer.

Mmm, so clean! I think Snow is a perfect bright to bring in spring.

Illamasqua Phallic - Swatches and Review (With a bonus of Kleancolor Aurora)

I am a recent convert to the Illamasqua brand (avoids beauty bloggers throwing rocks at me for my late party arrival) but Phallic was on my wishlist for aaaaages. Unfortunately, I am just not as in mad-love with it as I thought I'd be.

It is absolutely amazing in the bottle. I have no problem with that. But on the nail it is a little.. dull. Inside it looks very black and the shimmer is quite hidden.

This was outdoor without direct sunlight. A beautiful navy, but just not quite blue enough. It did have a major redeeming feature though - it is perfect as a base for Kleancolors!

This is Aurora layered over. I tried a few others which looked equally fantastic. Though for the premium price, I don't really want a polishes redeeming feature to be the fact it's a good base for polishes that cost $1.75!

I might need to try this one again, see if my mind changes in a month or so. If not, I might need to add it to a swap list.

What do you think? Am I being unnecessarily harsh?

OPI Jade is the New Black and Orly Lucky Duck Comparison Swatches

After posting my bottle comparison from the Orly Birds of a Feather swatches and review, a lovely reader requested a nail swatch or OPI Jade is the New Black and Orly Lucky Duck. From memory I recalled JitNB was lighter, but once they were on the nail I was surprised.

L-R (Pinkie to index) JitNB, LD, JitNB, LD

JitNB is a smidgen half shade darker than Lucky Duck.

They are virtually inseparable in regular light.

And there is not enough difference to deem one shade more flattering than the other.

I thought using the flash would show up different base colours, but alas, foiled again.

Both polishes have a fantastic formula and these swatches are two coats each. If you already own one, I think you can safely quash your lemming for the other. As far as greens go, I think this is a particularly beautiful shade, so perhaps if it's your colour you can justify a back up in the other? Ok, I'll just take off my enabler cap now... :)

China Glaze Peachy Keen - Swatches and Review

Sorry for the delay in posts (and I promise I'll be putting up a comparison pic of Jade is the New Black and Lucky Duck this week for you Ulmiel!) but I have a busy week ahead, so today's post is a quick one.

China Glaze Peachy Keen is from the Up and Away and is a bright pastel (contradiction?) orange.

The colour reminds me of Kraft Easy Mac... so I don't often wear it, however when I do I'm pleasantly surprised. The formula was a little thick, but was even in two coats.

Orly Pin Up Collection - Swatches and Review

We all have a colour that we don't necessarily love to pieces, yet it still looks good on us. For me it's hot pink... hot pink nail polish seems to be the most flattering on my super pale hands. So when I saw Orly's Pin Up collection, I knew the pinks would be good, but did I need a full size? It turns out I do, but stupid me only picked up the minis. Oh and I forgot to mention how incredibly amazing the glitters are. More reason to have bought full sizes!

The purple is Bubbly Bombshell and below is Here Comes Trouble. HCT has glitter in a sheer green base, whereas BB is a clear base with purple.

As you can see on BB, it is rather chunky glitter. Nothing a top coat won't solve though.

Va Va Voom is the neon on the group and literally glows in low light. Coquette Cutie is a great medium hot pink with a tad of coral thrown in for good measure.

I just love this collection. Great pinks and unique glitters... You can buy this collection from Orly Beauty online or your favourite e-tailer.

OPI Banana Bandana Swatches and Review

The weather is still cold, but I'm starting to crave some bright colours to encourage the warm to emerge. What better colour to wear than a sunny yellow from a collection called SUNbelievable?

For some reason my fingers in this photo remind me of half an octopus. Anyway. I love yellow. So sunny and mellow.. (anyone remember that M&M ad with Megan Mullally in it? No? Moving on.)

It is a three coater, but providing you wait a minute between layers and do thin coats, it was very manageable and there was no streaking. You can see VNL but it isn't as evident in the shade.

I don't think it's the most flattering colour, but I throw all caution to the wind because I just love the colour. I think this will divide some people though, yellow seems to be the politics and religion of the colour world - don't discuss it.

Do I have any fellow yellow lovers out there?

Zoya Savita - Swatches and Review

I know mattes and their suede counterparts have gone slightly out of fashion, but that doesn't stop me loving Zoya Savita. It is so beautiful!

It has a satin finish that is anything but one dimensional.

In the shade it doesn't shine as much, but it's still a great purple.

I think this is my favourite matte/suede of all time, it's so unique and vibrant for something that appears to be flat. Plus it dries in about a minute.

Essie Da Bush - Swatch and Review

I like neutrals when the occasion calls for it, but sometimes taupes and greys can get a bit boring. This is where Essie Da Bush from the Resort 2011 collection comes in. It is a really light sage/grey that goes on smoothly in two coats and regardless of the light looks the same. Which is quite rare I've found.

Nyx Haul and Jumbo Eye Pencil Review - Milk, Yoghurt and Iced Mocha

I love a bargain. So when I saw Cherry Culture was having a 50% off the marked price on Nyx I thought now was the time to take the plunge and try the brand I'd heard so many good things about.

Here is my haul in all it's glamourous beauty. For a mere $40 I obtained:
- Powder Blush: Peach
- Jumbo Eye Pencil: Milk, Yoghurt, Iced Mocha
- Eyeshadow Trio: Baby Pink/Cotton Candy/Spring Flower and Purple/Deep Purple/Prune
- Nude on Nude Natural Eye Kit
- Concealer Jar: Green
- Round Lipstick: Tea Rose and Harmonica

So today's post is a review for the Jumbo Eye Pencils.

L-R Milk, Iced Mocha, Yoghurt

In my opinion, these live up to the hype. I have used them as a base, all over colour, highlighter as well as a liner. They each have a very creamy texture and they glide on nicely. I didn't have too much creasing over time, but then I rarely do with eye shadows. I think Yoghurt was my favourite as it is the perfect peachy/champagne color - very versatile! Milk was a good highlighter and Iced Mocha worked when I needed some definition.

A quality swatch pic if ever there was one. As you can see they are rich, but they also sit in the lines of my hand. Thankfully I don't have too many around my eyes!

For $3, these were absolutely worth it, though have read many reviews that they crease within an hour. As a base though, they are absolutely excellent and I highly recommend.

OPI Mermaid Tears plus Nfu Oh 87, 51 and China Glaze Atlantis - Swatches and Review

Today we have OPI Mermaid Tears from the Pirates of the Caribbean collection. I think I'm the only person in the world who doesn't care for the movies, but I was quite fond of this collection, especially Mermaid Tears. It was so flattering and very versatile when it came to layering.

Mermaid Tears is a beautiful soft dusty green that leans to the blue side. I think it's very unique, especially to OPI who aren't really known for their blues and greens.

Excuse the super massive gap between ring and pinkie finger. It went on smoothly and was opaque in two coats. I just loved the colour, but couldn't help finding a few things to layer over the top to add some sparkle.

Here it is with Nfu Oh 87 over the top. 87 is a pretty old Nfu Oh and if you wear it on it's own it's nothing special. But once you layer it over the top of something it provides a gorgeous iridescent shimmer.

I also tried Nfu Oh 54 over the top. 54 is similar to 52, but instead of a dark base it has a clear base - perfect for adding some flakies without altering the base colour. It is so hard to capture on camera though, it can give a sort of mouldy, damp spot look in the wrong light.

Finally I tried one coat of China Glaze Atlantis over the top. I love this combination as it lets the holo particles shine without having to worry about using 3 coats just to achieve the bottle colour.

Bottle Comparison Day Part 2 - Purples and Khaki

Thanks to your very favourable feedback from Bottle Comparison Day 1, I have another set of bottle comparisons to show you! Today I've got some purples and a khaki to compare, so sit back and enjoy the view.

L-R Orly Out of This World, Orly Galaxy Girl, Orly Royal Velvet

From memory all these bottles resembled one another. OoTW and GG are both from the Cosmic FX collection (one of my favourite collections of all time) and Royal Velvet is from the Precious collection. OoTW is a medium purple with pink shimmer, GG is a maroon purple with blue and Royal Velvet is a blue duochrome. These are all completely unique so feel free to get each one.

L-R OPI Rumple's Wiggen and OPI Done out in Deco

To the naked eye these two are the same. However I refrained from shaking them before photographing so you could see the different bases used on the top. Rumple's Wiggin from the Shrek collection has a very light blue base whereas Done out in Deco from the South Beach collection has a far richer blurple base. Unless you are a lavender-a-holic, I suggest just buying one. Rumple's Wiggin is more flattering on my pale skin tone as Done out in Deco make me look a bit grey.

All I can say is YAY, purple holos. These are all very different though as Ozotic is a deep red based linear holo, OGW from the Kaleidoscope collection (another of my faves!) is a medium purple linear/scattered holo and VV from the Techno collection is rich blue based purple with holo flecks. Ozotic has the best wear time and the nicest formula with VV coming in a close second.

L-R Zoya Gemma and Essie Sew Psyched

When a friend bought me Gemma for my birthday, I loved the colour, but had slight reservations how it would look on. Sew Psyched on the other hand was on my wishlist for ages and I was convinced I'd love it. Turns out Gemma from the Intimate collection is super flattering as it has a great hidden purple shimmer and the slightly yellower tone works really well on pale skin. Sew Psyched on the other hand is far more khaki and grey based and really suits medium golden toned skin.

So there you have it, another Bottle Comparison Day come and past. Do any of these tickle your fancy?

Orly Royal Velvet - Swatches and Review

In addition to my holographic polish love, I'm also crazy about duochromes. So when I saw Royal Velvet in the Precious press release, I knew it was a must have.

When you look at the bottle you assume Royal Velvet will be predominantly purple, but it is actually far bluer than you think.

The effect is achieved by adding squillions of blue shimmer particles into a sheer purple base.You can see on my ring finger just how sheer that is.

This is how it looks the majority of the time indoors.

And this is how it looks when it catches any sort of light.

It is a very beautiful colour and I can't see many people not liking at least one aspect of it.

My HG Hair Product - Kerastase Resistance Age Recharge Gel Masque

To quote one of my favourite guilty pleasure reality shows, 'hair is important'. 10 marks to anyone who can guess where the beautiful shallowness is from!

I'm usually pretty good when it comes to looking after my hair, I wash, rinse, repeat and don't using hot styling products too obsessively. However, there are days where I've GHD'd it too much or the wind and sun have attacked it and it gets a little bit dry.

This is where today's post comes in. No matter how bad my hair gets, using the Kerastase Resistance Age Recharge Gel Masque (what a mouthful) returns my hair to a glorious shiny mane of fabulousity. Or something similar. Hence it is my holy grail.

The masque comes in typical Kerastase packing, a lustrous metallic green box with a heavy tub inside.

My one of two minor negatives for this product is the fact the tub isn't terribly ergonomic if you're using it in the shower (and really where else would you use it?). It can get a bit fiddly with wet hands.

Plus the masque inside is quite a slippery gel, but once you scoop it out successfully, it absorbs into the hair immediately. I like to coat the hair and leave it on for at least 5 minutes, then comb through and wash out. The scent is a lovely fresh salon smell with no stand out notes like Tigi products (for example) have.

Once my hair is dry following the treatment, it is glossy, feels stronger and feels protected from future damage. It is definitely a product that lives up to it's claims.

The only other downside is the price. As a student I find $50 on a hair mask expensive, but it lasts a long time (I'd say at least 10 treatments depending on how generous you are/long your hair is) and really works. You can find this at selected hair salons, plus a few online beauty stores like Strawberrynet and Lookfantastic.

Essie Your Hut Or Mine Swatches and Review

Number one from my Nail Supplies haul is Essie Your Hut or Mine from the Resort 2011 collection. I love Essie resort collections, very pretty colours.

YHOM is a very pleasant melony pink colour with a gold shimmer.

Vastly different outdoors than indoors, I think I prefer the outdoor photo as the melon looks a little more unique than the indoor pic. Plus the hidden shimmer is revealed.

Gold and pink shimmer really lifts this polish from being an average 'mum polish'. I was impressed with the formula, this was opaque in two coats and dried nice and fast.

Bottle Comparison Day Part 1 - Orlys from Birds of a Feather

As I was reorganising my stash I noticed a few bottles looking the same, so I took some photos of the bottles to compare. These are just some superficial observations, I haven't swatched them yet to properly compare.

First up is Orly Lucky Duck and OPI Jade is the New Black. As JitNB has been sitting for a while, it's very evident it leans very yellow. LD on the other hand looks like it's bluer. Having tried them both, but not together I recall JitNB being more flattering on my pale skin tone.

Orly Halley's Comet, Sweet Peacock and Lunar Eclipse all sort of look alike but when you get down to it are nothing alike. Halley's Comet is almost jelly like with a lot of gold throughout, so it can be discounted immediately. Sweet Peacock is a flat (but amazing!) foil, as opposed to Lunar Eclipse with is almost a bit of a duo foil and is the darkest of the bunch.

Orly Nite Owl and Butter London All Hail McQueen. Orly is a touch lighter and the most obvious difference is that All Hail McQueen has holographic particles in it, whereas Nite Owl is shimmer. I love these sort of colours though!

Finally the two that are most definitely dupes, OPI Merry Midnight and Orly Fowl Play. The only difference to the naked eye is that Merry Midnight's red flakes are a smidgen bigger than Fowl Plays.

Essie Nail Mail from Nail Supplies

China Glaze Ahoy!

Today's polish is courtesy of the China Glaze Anchors Away collection. Ahoy! is a red leaning raspberry shimmer that has rather incredible staying power.

Unfortunately I don't think the shimmer translated that well on the nail and frankly I think the colour leans a little to red for me. I would've preferred it to be pinker. It did last for 4 days though with very very minimal tip wear.

What do all you lovely readers think?

Deborah Lippmann Across the Universe

I took me longer than most to get sucked into the Deborah Lippmann phenomena, but now I am, I can't believe I wasn't sooner. What I can't believe even more is that Across the Universe wasn't the first polish of hers I bought. Madness.

Just look how beautiful it is! Thousands of green and silver hexagonal pieces floating in a sea of blue glitter.

This was three coats and unfortunately there is VNL is direct sunlight.

However VNL is non existent in regular and indoor light.

Now for some zooms!

I think you all need to run out and buy this. Either run to the shops, the computer, or your friendly neighbourhood Lippmann dealer - you need this. Though be prepared for a strenuous removal session, I somehow ended up with no colour left, but silver hexagonal glitter welded to my nail.

Color Club Revolution Swatches and Review

Number two from my recent 8ty8 Beauty haul is Color Club Revolution. I had high expectations as dark holos wow me like no other, but I think Revolution falls short.

Normal light, as expected it is merely a charcoal base with some silver specks.

And sunshine. Little bit disappointing, no? I am not aware that there are two versions like with OPI My Private Jet, so I'm assuming I have a dud. There are very fine holo specks though, but nothing linear like other swatches I've seen.

It did have one major upside though, it was opaque in one single coat. Legitimately opaque as well, no bald spots or thin patches. These swatches were with two coats though.

So what do you think? Do you have any polishes you think might be duds?

China Glaze Turned Up Turquoise

Here's the first polish from my nail mail post on Saturday. China Glaze Turned Up Turquoise is a borderline neon that leans more green than blue.

It has a very satiny finish - this photo was with a topcoat!

Here in the sun you can see the very subtle shimmer a little better.

It was very hard to capture it's true colour as it is so much greener than you'd think.

These last two photos from my iPhone is how it looked the majority of the time.

Overall this was a funny one... I think I would've liked it a little more if it was a bit bluer, but at least now it's removed my lemming for Orly Bailamos and China Glaze Four Leaf Clover.

Nail Mail from 8ty8 Beauty

I got some Nail Mail yesterday from 8ty8 Beauty, a site I hadn't used in a while, but I'm glad I'm back as the shipping time was pretty quick and the polishes were dirt cheap.

I'm also going to reveal my slight dork side because I got excited about the paper it was wrapped in - real authentic New York newspaper! Ha. It's not even like I've never traveled or anything... such a dork.

Now onto what everyone came here to see, the polish. From left to right we have:

Color Club Revolution, China Glaze Rodeo Fanatic, China Glaze Atlantis, China Glaze Turned Up Turquoise and my personal highlight, the HTF Essie Ruby Slippers.

Philosophy 3 in 1 Cinnamon Buns Review

This cold weather is giving me the perfect excuse to have nice hot showers and what better way to indulge then with a shower gel that leaves the bathroom smelling like cake?

Philosophy have been around for quite a while now and are known for their simple packaging with recipes on it. Although I haven't tried the cinnamon bun recipe, it does look delicious.

It claims to be three things in one. A shower gel, bubble bath and shampoo. I have only tried it as a shower gel since I haven't read great things about it's shampoo qualities (plus I have my own fabulous hair routine that keeps my hair ad ready) and baths have not been allowed since the great Queensland water restrictions movement.

But as a shower gel it is wonderful. It is very shiny and almost shimmery, while being extremely smooth and soft on the skin. Also it lathers like no one's business.

You barely need any to get it lathering like the above, so it gets bonus points for thriftyness. It smells like a packet vanilla cake, so slightly synthetic vanilla with a touch of real cinnamon. The smell lingers in the room, but not on the body which I prefer to I can freely wear perfume.

More evidence of the hyper-lather qualities... This photo was after attempting to wash it away twice.

Overall I am a big fan and I look forward to trying some other scents such as Mimosa when it starts running out. I bought from Strawberrynet, but I've seen it on many online beauty stores.

Ozotic Pro #513 - A Purple Linear Holographic

Let me start off by saying I just can't get enough of holographic polishes. They shine, they sparkle and sometimes they even resemble velvet (a highly undervalued textile in my opinion).

Look at the linear holo!

I had never tried the Ozotic Pro brand before 513, but now I have it has created a dangerous lust for the remainder of their inventory. If I'm this impressed with 513, I don't know how I'll handle the magic that is the Ozotic multichromes.

These swatches are two coats, with one shot in lamp light and the rest in sunlight.

What do you think? Are you a fan of holos or Ozotic Pro?

Orly Birds of a Feather Collection Swatches and Review

I'm back! The drudgery of exams has left me and now I feel free enough to re-enter the blogging world. I thought I'd start of with a full collection post, the Orly Birds of a Feather collection. I was extremely lucky and won it in a competition on Twitter run by @ORLYAustralia. Thanks again Orly!

I've also been playing around with my swatch photos, so please excuse the inconsistencies. I'm yet to master the bottle + nail shot (my hand looks like Jim Carey's Claw in Liar Liar), so I think I'll stick with the invisible bottle shots for the meanwhile. So, onto swatches and review.

Nite Owl

This was my equal favourite of the collection. It went on extremely smoothly, was opaque in two coats and when coupled with the micro glitter the murky beige/greige colour is fairly unique. Although I will do a comparison with butter London's All Hail McQueen later in the month to compare.

Peachy Parrot

A orangey peach leaning metallic with minor remains of brush strokes.This is probably my least favourite, though looking back it's definitely growing on me. It appears oddly flattering in the pictures too as I have a tendency to be lobster leaning with some colours.

Lucky Duck:

A medium jade green with a jelly like consistency. This one I'm a fan of and the VNL isn't as obvious in real life. It was the only creme of the collection with no glitter, flakes or shimmer. I'll compare it to OPI Jade is the New Black later this month.

Sea Gurl

A gunmetal metallic that borders on being a foil. I didn't notice any brush strokes after which was a bonus. I love darker colours and I can see myself wearing it often. It was the only one that looked the exact same indoors and out too.

Fowl Play

If I didn't already own OPI Merry Midnight I would be jumping up and down in an undignified manner singing it's praises. There are beautiful blue, purple and red flakes in a plummy jelly base and I wish nail companies would make more like this! It was the only three coater though out of the bunch. Definitely pick it up if you don't already own Merry Midnight. For a great comparison, check out Carina's at Gilded Nails

Sweet Peacock

Looking at the bottle I thought this would be a dupe for Orly Lunar Eclipse but I was so wrong. It is much lighter and positively glows in normal light as seen in the second photo. It is also an incredible foil rather than a mere glitter and personally I think foils are underrated. This is an absolute must have and although it isn't a glitter, it's in the same category as OPI Absolutely Alice colour wise.

A Short Break

Shoe Story Sunday #18 - Corelli Pumps

I bought these from Williams for a mere $49.95. You can certainly feel it though, as shiny as they are, they don't fit properly so they fall off the back of your foot even with insoles in plus they rub at the toe. They are however very shiny which always adds massive points in my magpie-like mind.

I wish I could get some identical comfortable ones as they are great for work due to a stable conic heel that isn't too high coupled with an almond toe. I'll keep hunting unless any of you lovely readers have suggestions?

Nail of the Week #12 - OPI Take The Stage

Although I haven't showcased it too much, OPI has to be my favourite nail brand. Take the Stage is from the 2010 Burlesque collection and it a copper orange bronze foil. I am starting to love foil finishes, especially ones that aren't streaky. TTS goes on in almost one coat if you have a steady hand, but the pics are two coats in natural light in the car when I was waiting for someone.

It matches the dashboard clock! Only problem I've found with it is it shoes up any nail unevenness.

A friend came to visit and brought me her Shatters to try and this is one of the combinations I tried.

China Glaze Flip Flop Fantasy (fluro red, rather than pink as seen here) under lamp light with Black Shatter and Silver Shatter. Personally I think it's amazing with black over. It's inspired me to buy some more fluros too!
